European Son by criticalbill

European Son is a slowly shifting and a bit noodly and loopy and fiddly bit of music, with more noise and droning than usual for this podcast. It’s part of the Music Challenge; here’s the original, by the Velvet Underground.

Venus in Furs by dagosto

Venus in Furs is a mellow and jazzy cover of the droning Velvet Underground song. The instrument reminiscent of a steel drum or a xylophone is the mbira, which is new to me.

This is the first of the the Velvet Underground covers Music Challenge (playlist). You’ll be hearing a lot more from this challenge this week.

Silver Machine by billieraymartin

Silver Machine is an electro cover of a Hawkwind song, done by DJ Hell, featuring Billie Ray Martin.

Happy Pi Day!

Unrecognisable-lullejah by Admira

Unrecognisable-lullejah is just, you know, this classical guitar piece.

Okay, yeah, maybe it continues Hallelujah Week.

Halle Hula by cortex

Halle Hula is a hula-flavored cover of Hallelujah, just ukelele and singing and *so much* joy.

Halleluyeah! by The World Famous

Halleluyeah! is a glistening 80’s piece of hair metal butt rock. It’s ridiculous and awesome.

Yeah, let’s do a Hallelujah week.

Skallelujah by Jon_Evil

Skallelujah is a ska cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

There was a Mefi Music Challenge to cover this song, inspired by Hallelukulelejah (previously on the podcast). I’ll try to not go overboard with it, but I can’t make any promises.

Sensitive Artist by askmeaboutLOOM

Sensitive Artist is spoken word, with some nice accompaniment – flutes, harmonizing backup singers, a keytar, and screaming. It’s a cover, originally by King Missile.

Hallelukulelejah by jhighmore

Hallelukulelejah is a cover of “Hallelujah,” originally by Leonard Cohen and popularized by Jeff Buckley. It’s a great song, covered many, many times. In fact, covering this became the next Music Challenge after this posting – you’ll hear some of the results here in a month or so.

Seven Nation Army by grubi

Seven Nation Army is a power-pop cover of the White Stripes song, which I love. This cover was inspired by a post about various covers of the song, including a great one by the Flaming Lips.

One More Time by Admira

One More Time is a classical guitar cover of Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” from 1998.

Bathe Your Children by doubtfulpalace

Bathe Your Children is a goofy cover of the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young song, “Teach Your Children,” as a parody with nonsensical lyrics.

Insomnia sure makes weird things happen. To insomnia!

My Heart Will Give You Up by The White Hat

So I have some good news and some bad news. And then a bit more good news. Like a sandwich. Anyway.

The good news is, Celine Dion isn’t well-represented in My Heart Will Give You Up. Just in the intro.

The bad news is, Rick Astley is around.

There’s more good news. It’s well done, with The White Hat’s vocals and skills at banjo, guitar, and harmonica making what could be just a goofy song, sort of good and epic (although yes, still deeply silly). And, I don’t think there’s any more rickrolling on the horizon here, though I won’t make promises.

Saint V. Massacree by The White Hat

Saint V. Massacree is just a charming banjo tune – possibly a cover of Guitar Rag, including an accompanying guitar.

O Superman by cortex

O Superman is a non-electronic and mostly acoustic cover of the experimental Laurie Anderson song. This is fairly unusual and experimental in its own right.

I Knew the Bride When She Used to Rock’n’Roll by Karlos the Jackal

I Knew the Bride When She Used to Rock’n’Roll is like a Magnetic Fields outtake; deliberate pace, bass singing, and unusual instruments – Marxophone and autoharp.

The original versions are by Nick Lowe and also by Dave Edmunds, and they’re rockabilly or roots rock.

Take a Chance on Me by equality7-2521

Take a Chance on Me is a melancholy indie pop take on the ABBA classic.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by ford and the prefects

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is a poppier cover of the Neutral Milk Hotel song.

This is the first appearance here from ford and the prefects.

Folsom Prison Blues by chillmost

Folsom Prison Blues is chillmost’s faithful cover of the classic Johnny Cash tune.

Runnin’ With The Songsmith by mrzarquon

There’s a story behind Runnin’ With The Songsmith. Microsoft released Songsmith, software that would take vocals and make up backing music, with frequently unintentionally hilarious results. mrzarquon put it together with the lead vocals from Van Halen’s “Runnin’ with the Devil.” The result is amazingly shambolic and hilarious, though it bears little relation to what humans refer to as “music.” It received attention from outside the site, like from Gizmodo, Stereogum, and the New York Times.

The sliding whistle gets me every time.

Then He Kissed Me (Ultra GAMELAN Mix!) by clcapps

Then He Kissed Me (Ultra GAMELAN Mix!) is poppy, with an organ and gamelan backing the singer. It’s a gender-bending cover of the song by The Crystals.

All I Want Is You by Corduroy

All I Want Is You is a cover of the Barry Louis Polisar song, which popped up in the movie Juno. This is a pretty straightforward cover – it’s folksy, with a banjolele and acoustic guitar. It’s a cute song!

I Don’t Want to be Here by Devils Rancher

I Don’t Want to be Here is a cover of a britpop song by XTC’s Andy Partridge. It’s poppy rock, with some atmospheric guitars, catchy and layered.

I’ll Stab You (for Sumru) by cortex

I’ll Stab You (for Sumru) is a parody of Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called To Say I Love You,” with lyrics about a specific game of Diplomacy. If you haven’t heard of it, Diplomacy is a board war game of intense scheming and two-faced political alliance-building and backstabbing. The game seems smart and challenging and highly recommended, with some really big caveats.

Where was I? Oh yeah. The song is a decent mimickry of an earnest song, with a piano and nice synth strings in the background.

Dammit: Reprise by tmcw

Dammit: Reprise is tmcw’s second try at covering Blink 182’s song; his first take was also featured here. It’s a warm, friendly, and acoustic take.

Kait by onehalfjunco

Kait is a cover of the Ben Folds Five song “Kate.” I wouldn’t call it “sloppy” – I’d say it’s joyous and raucous and fun, and it’s particularly awesome because it was all played by one guy.

Franklin’s Tower by terrapin

Franklin’s Tower is a lovely, drunk jam band at a wedding, with an appreciative audience. I love the atmosphere! It’s a more laid-back cover of a Grateful Dead song, by the way.

tetris (intel+dubstepmix) by ageispolis

tetris (intel+dubstepmix) is a remix of the Tetris theme, including a sample from Intel ads. It had me at “Tetris.”

Linus and Lucifer by doubtfulpalace

Linus and Lucifer is a cover of Vince Guaraldi’s “Linus and Lucy,” from the Peanuts special, “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” It’s electronica – more dark and intense and harsh, compared to the sweetness and light of the original. It’s still entertaining and fun, and you can still do Peanuts dances to it!

I’ve noodled with the website a bit – there’s now an HTML5 player for the individual songs, which works on mobile devices. Also, I put the Yahoo Webplayer on – look to the bottom left – so you can play all the songs on a page! So, you can hear, say, all the “instrumental” music, one page at a time. It requires Flash, for now.

Little Red Corvette by chococat

Little Red Corvette is a fun rockabilly cover of the Prince song.

Watching the Detectives by chococat

Watching the Detectives is a lovely take on the Elvis Costello classic – acoustic, but with a touch of reggae in the background.

Sorry for the delay! I lost track of the queue of songs I’d posted, and Metric’s new “Synthetica” album has grabbed me and won’t let go. I highly recommend it!

Go Gadget, Go! by csimpkins

Go Gadget, Go! is an instrumental, upbeat, and jazzy cover of the Inspector Gadget theme song, which is in turn inspired by Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

Here comes your man by ORthey

Here comes your man is ORthey’s cover of the classic Pixies tune, as an acoustic folky tune with some adroit guitar fingerpicking.

Edit: Oops, I didn’t include the MP3. I’ll say this is the post for today and tomorrow.

Cancao de amor by micayetoca

Canção de amor is micayetoca’s cover of The Cure’s “Lovesong,” in Portuguese. It’s a gothic love ballad, and this is a bit stripped-down and lovely.

There were a lot of covers in November 2008, thanks to threads that spawned a sorta-unofficial Music Challenge. More of those will be coming up!

Are You Gonna Go My Way by mexican

Are You Gonna Go My Way is just an utterly ridiculous cover of Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way.” It’s not respectful or as close as possible to the original, but I find it highly entertaining.

Happy Fourth of July, everybody!

Wish You Were Here by backseatpilot

Wish You Were Here is a stripped-down, entirely acoustic cover of the Pink Floyd song. I think it’s cool that this was the first recording backseatpilot ever made, after a year of guitar practice.

novocaine by bitterkitten

novocaine is a heavier-but-still danceable synth cover of the Green Day song, Give Me Novacaine (the spelling is intentionally different). I’ve had a soft spot for this song since the Dean Gray mashup, Novocaine Rhapsody.

FAIRWAY by NemesisVex

FAIRWAY is NemesisVex’s cover of a song from the Japanese pop band, SUPERCAR, all jangly guitars. The (translated) lyrics are enjoyably cryptic and contemplative.

Take Five by danb

Take Five is a cover of the Paul Desmond song, done capably with two acoustic guitars. It’s originally performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Oops… I Did It Again by COBRA!

Oops… I Did It Again is an entertaining punk cover of the Britney Spears tune.
